Officially established on June 16, 1955, the station has a rich and storied broadcasting history spanning over seven decades, serving as the premier audio medium for preserving the rich cultural, linguistic, and musical traditions of the Himalayan state. Situated near the historic Chaura Maidan, it has long been an essential voice connecting the rugged mountain terrains with national developments. The station's extensive programming schedule covers a diverse array of content including national and regional news bulletins, current affairs, classical and light Indian vocal music, and authentic Himachali folk songs. Broadcasting in Hindi and various regional Pahari dialects, Akashvani Shimla places special emphasis on rural empowerment, agricultural advisories for mountain farming, weather forecasts critical for hilly terrain, educational segments, and public welfare campaigns. It also features special audience programs tailored for women, youth, farmers, and armed forces personnel. Reaching listeners via its powerful 774 AM terrestrial transmitter as well as supplementary FM frequencies, Akashvani Shimla also extends its broadcast globally through digital HLS online streams on the NewsOnAir platform.
