π About
WCCR Purdue Student Radio is a fully online, student-run radio station broadcasting 24/7 from West Lafayette, Indiana. The station's history dates back to 1949 when two Cary Quad roommates began broadcasting illegally from their dorm room. After being shut down by the FCC, they collaborated with Cary Club to establish an official setup, leading to WCCR's official launch in 1952 as a carrier current station transmitting through the residence hall's electrical wiring. During the mid-20th century, it became part of the broader Purdue Radio Network (PRN), which thrived as one of the largest student radio systems in the world and notably made WCCR the first student station in the country to broadcast in stereo. Though changing administration policies, aging infrastructure, and the rise of other campus priorities caused parts of the PRN to collapse by the late 1980s, WCCR and a few peers persevered. In the 2000s, WCCR relocated its headquarters to the basement of Cary Northwest, upgraded its broadcast and audio equipment, and completely transitioned into an internet-only station that bypassed traditional FCC licensing constraints. Today, every single program is independently produced, created, and hosted by Purdue University students, giving individual DJs the freedom to curate their own playlists, cultivate unique program styles, and build dedicated listener communities both on and off campus. The station's diverse programming spans a wide spectrum of genres, including alternative rock, indie music, hip hop, electronic dance music (EDM), jazz, hard rock, and open-format talk shows. Beyond its daily online broadcasts, WCCR is heavily integrated into campus culture, most notably by hosting 'Rock the Quad,' an annual free spring music festival launched in 2006 that showcases student musicians and prominent local acts, drawing hundreds of attendees to celebrate live campus music and community. Serving students, alumni, and music lovers globally, WCCR remains a vital hub for creative expression, independent audio production, and musical discovery at Purdue University.
