📖 About

WCBT Soul 1230 AM / 102.7 FM is a classic rhythm & blues, Southern soul, and traditional gospel radio station licensed to Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. Operating on 1230 kHz AM with FM translator W274AZ at 102.7 FM, the station serves listeners across Halifax and Northampton counties in eastern North Carolina as well as neighboring communities in Southside Virginia, including Emporia. The station is currently owned and operated by Shantae Broadcasting Inc. and delivers a rich blend of urban oldies, blues, inspirational gospel programming, and community-focused broadcasts. First signing on the air in 1940, WCBT is one of the oldest broadcast stations in the Roanoke Valley region. Throughout its long historical legacy, the station has served as a cornerstone of local broadcasting, famously launching the early broadcasting career of future U.S. Senator Jesse Helms, who served as news director in the late 1940s. Over the decades, WCBT evolved through various music and talk formats—including periods as a country station and an ESPN Sports Radio network affiliate—before adopting its current, highly popular Southern Soul and Gospel format to serve regional audience demographics. Today, WCBT's daily programming combines classic R&B hits and Southern soul music with weekend specialty shows. Signature features include 'The Bangin Gospel Show' hosted by Donnell Bryant on Saturday mornings, along with a full block of Sunday morning ministry broadcasts featuring regional church pastors, worship services, and community spiritual leaders. The station maintains a strong local commitment by serving as a platform for local ministry, community announcements, and civic engagement.
