The ZOO KZEW Radio Project

📖 About

The ZOO KZEW Radio Project is a listener-supported, volunteer-run, commercial-free internet radio station headquartered in the Dallas/Fort Worth area of Texas. Launched in 2023 by a dedicated group of veteran radio broadcasters and music enthusiasts, the station was created to revive and preserve the legacy of Dallas's legendary KZEW 98FM 'The Zoo' (which originally broadcasted from 1973 to 1989 under creator Ira Lipson). Designed as an antidote to corporate radio consolidation, endless commercial breaks, and restrictive playlists, the project operates as a non-profit style broadcast dedicated to restoring freeform radio as an authentic art form. Programming on The ZOO KZEW Radio Project features a diverse and adventurous freeform album-oriented rock format infused with classic Texas-sized swagger. The station's expansive playlist spans classic rock, progressive rock, vintage and modern Texas blues, comedy bits, deep vault cuts, and new releases from emerging independent artists. Specialized programming includes syndicated and archival broadcasts like 'The Flower Power Hour' with Ken & MJ Rundel, alongside custom station imaging, exclusive song backstories, and artist features. Operated under Camelback Consulting, Inc. and supported entirely through listener subscriptions, donations, and merchandise sales, The ZOO KZEW Radio Project broadcasts globally in high fidelity via its official interactive web portal at thezoorocks.com as well as popular digital radio aggregators. Beyond just streaming audio, the station's web ecosystem offers listeners detailed track notes, artist tour links, album artwork, and community discussion forums, recreating the spirit of community-driven rock radio for a modern worldwide audience.
