SomaFM - Metal Detector

📖 About

SomaFM - Metal Detector is a specialized, listener-supported internet radio channel broadcasting from the headquarters of the independent radio pioneer SomaFM in San Francisco, California. Created as part of the broader SomaFM network—which was originally founded by Rusty Hodge in February 2000—Metal Detector was launched to cater to fans of aggressive, heavy underground and alternative music genres. The channel is entirely commercial-free, relying exclusively on listener donations and corporate-free curation to maintain its uncompromised artistic integrity. The programming on Metal Detector spans a vast and extreme spectrum of heavy music, ranging from black metal to doom metal, progressive metal to sludge, thrash to post-metal, stoner rock to crossover thrash, as well as punk and industrial. Listeners are treated to an uncompromising mix of crushing riffs, mind-bending tones, and vocal torture that covers both classic anthems and bleeding-edge new releases from underground and indie record labels. Whether it is slow, atmospheric doom or blistering speed, the station provides a deep dive into the heavier side of modern and historical rock subgenres. As part of the globally recognized SomaFM network, Metal Detector benefits from a loyal, worldwide audience of metalheads and heavy music aficionados. Operating without traditional radio ads, the station relies on meticulous human curation rather than algorithmic playlists, ensuring that deep cuts and authentic independent artists receive airtime alongside well-established names in the metal community. It stands as a testament to independent net radio culture, offering an unvarnished portal into the global underground metal ecosystem.
