📖 About

Radio Newark (WIZU-LP) is a non-commercial educational science and community radio station licensed to Newark, Delaware, serving the local city area on 99.9 FM as well as a global online audience. The station was initially launched as a dedicated web-streaming service on April 1, 2010. Following an application by parent non-profit organization Newark Community Radio, Inc., the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted a low-power FM construction permit and assigned the call sign WIZU-LP (phonetically chosen to sound like "Wise You") on February 14, 2014. Terrestrial FM broadcasts officially commenced on February 7, 2017, with its transmitter stationed on the STAR Campus at the University of Delaware. Unlike traditional talk or commercial music radio, Radio Newark operates with a specialized focus on science, space exploration, technology, microelectronics, astrobiology, and archaeology. Entirely run by a dedicated team of volunteers led by founders Stephen Worden, Ken Chisholm, and station voice David Lascko, the station curates high-quality educational content from dozens of prestigious broadcast partners. Its broadcast grid features programs from Voice of America, Big Picture Science, 90 Second Naturalist, and specialized NASA space news segments. In addition to syndicated science programming, Radio Newark is deeply committed to local community engagement and educational outreach. In October 2018, the station organized and facilitated a historic direct radio contact between students at Delcastle Technical High School and NASA astronaut Dr. Serena Auñon-Chancellor aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the ARISS program. Broadcasting at an Effective Radiated Power (ERP) of 85 watts on 99.9 MHz, Radio Newark continues to serve as Delaware's premiere educational radio platform.
