KROX (1260 AM) is a historic locally owned and operated news, talk, and sports radio station licensed to Crookston, Minnesota. Originally signing on the air on April 25, 1948, on 1050 kHz under the Crookston Broadcasting Company, the station later moved to 1260 kHz and expanded its reach across the Red River Valley of northwest Minnesota and eastern North Dakota. Today, KROX is owned by Gopher Communications Company, under the leadership of owner and general manager Frank Fee, remaining one of the few independently owned community radio stations in the region. Operating as 'The Voice of the Valley,' KROX features a comprehensive programming mix of local news, agricultural updates, community information, and regional talk throughout the day. At night, the station transitions to a Classic Rock music format. KROX is particularly celebrated for its extensive sports coverage, serving as the local radio home for major Minnesota sports franchises—including the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Timberwolves, Minnesota Wild, and Minnesota Golden Gophers—as well as University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles athletics and local Crookston High School sports broadcasts. KROX has earned numerous prestigious accolades for its broadcast journalism and community engagement, including multiple national Edward R. Murrow Awards and Associated Press recognitions. In addition to its primary 1260 AM signal (broadcasting at 1,000 watts day and 500 watts night), the station extends its coverage via FM translators K221GU (92.1 FM in Crookston) and K289CE (105.7 FM in Grand Forks, ND), along with digital web and mobile streaming platforms.
