📖 About

KMST (88.5 FM) is a non-commercial, listener-supported public radio station licensed to Rolla, Missouri, and serving the south-central region of the state. Originally launched in 1973 under the historic call letters KUMR, the station was established on the campus of the University of Missouri–Rolla (later renamed Missouri University of Science and Technology). For decades, it served as an independent campus and community broadcaster famous for eclectic music programming, regional cultural features, and long-running community favorites such as 'Bluegrass for a Saturday Night'. In July 2017, operational control of KMST was transferred to the University of Missouri–St. Louis as an extension of the St. Louis Public Radio (STLPR) network. Under this regional public media umbrella, KMST was integrated to broadcast the comprehensive news, talk, and cultural programming produced by STLPR and National Public Radio (NPR), sharing signature programs like Morning Edition and All Things Considered with listeners across south-central Missouri. The station transmits with a powerful 100,000-watt signal from Rolla, alongside a translator at 96.3 FM in Lebanon, making it a prominent broadcast anchor in the region. Accessible via its primary 88.5 FM terrestrial frequency, online web portals, and mobile streaming platforms, KMST continues to connect rural and regional Missouri communities with high-quality journalism, global reporting, and cultural storytelling. Whether keeping local commuters informed on state affairs or providing national NPR coverage, the station remains an essential public media resource in the heart of Missouri.
