📖 About

KMOJ (89.9 FM) is a non-commercial educational community radio station licensed to Minneapolis, Minnesota, serving the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area. Owned and operated by the non-profit organization Center for Communication and Development, KMOJ traces its origins back to 1976 when it began as WMOJ—a low-power AM station transmitting just a few blocks in the Sumner-Olson public housing developments. The station transitioned to FM in September 1978 as KMOJ at 89.7 FM, later moving to 89.9 FM in 1984 to increase power to 1,000 watts. Over the decades, KMOJ has stood as a cornerstone media voice dedicated to informing, educating, and empowering the African American community and broader communities of color across the Twin Cities. Programming on KMOJ features a rich mix of urban contemporary music including classic and modern R&B, soul, hip-hop, traditional and contemporary gospel, and smooth jazz. The daily schedule integrates community-oriented talk, public affairs reporting, health awareness initiatives, and local news updates. Popular programs and notable on-air personalities include General Manager Freddie Bell, legendary broadcaster Walter 'Q Bear' Banks, and syndicated entertainment broadcasts like The Sheryl Underwood Show. In addition to broadcasting, KMOJ serves as a hands-on training institute for aspiring minority broadcasters, journalists, and audio engineers. Broadcasting with an effective radiated power of 6,200 watts from its transmitter located in Arden Hills, Minnesota, KMOJ reaches listeners across Hennepin, Ramsey, Anoka, and Dakota counties. The station operates out of studios located at West Broadway Avenue in North Minneapolis and utilizes HD Radio technology, offering an HD2 digital subchannel branded as 'The ICE' carrying continuous hip-hop programming, as well as HD3 simulcasts of college radio station KVSC.
