Established under the non-profit organization Extend the Dream Foundation, Inc., KICI-LP began broadcasting in June 2018 in response to the declining presence of independent local media in the area. Driven by a dedicated team of volunteers, station management, and community producers, KICI-LP was founded with a mission to deliver accessible community-driven programming, amplify local voices, and foster inclusion by providing radio production opportunities for individuals with disabilities and diverse community members alike. Broadcasting at a power of 100 watts, KICI 105.3 FM provides an eclectic mix of independent news, thoughtful talk, civic and government affairs, cultural features, and diverse musical genres. Its music programming places a dedicated emphasis on Iowa artists and regional musicians, alongside genres spanning folk, jazz, Americana, roots, blues, and world music. The station's talk lineup features national progressive and educational broadcasts such as Democracy Now!, Big Picture Science, Bioneers, and Climate Connections, combined with distinct locally produced programming like Green Room IC, iHearIC Radio, and the Iowa City Police Log adaptation. Owned and governed by the Extend the Dream Foundation, KICI 105.3 FM serves as a vital media outlet for Johnson County and Iowa City residents. Through web streaming platforms and local terrestrial FM broadcasts, KICI remains committed to serving the public interest with engaging, grassroots, and alternative programming.
