The station officially signed on the air on May 4, 1986, initially broadcasting a soft adult contemporary format before transitioning into a popular oldies and classic hits destination in the early 1990s. Famous for historical stunts—such as playing endless variations of 'Louie Louie' under the brief moniker 'Louie 101.1'—the station formally adopted its current classic hits branding and scope on March 31, 2008. The station's daily programming is centered on upbeat pop and rock hits primarily from the 1970s and 1980s, appealing to loyal generations of music fans seeking nostalgic, feel-good anthems. Key 101 features a mix of seasoned local air personalities and engaging weekday segments, including morning drive content, middays, and specialized weekend programming like the nationally syndicated 'Beatle Brunch'. Its song rotation captures legendary artists and definitive tracks from classic rock icons, pop staples, and vintage dance hits of the late 20th century. Owned and operated by Stephens Media Group (SMG-Spokane, LLC), Key 101 broadcasts with a maximum Class C signal power of 100,000 watts, utilizing a transmitter located near Freeman, Washington, and studios situated on East 57th Avenue in Spokane. In addition to its powerful terrestrial FM footprint, the station extends its reach worldwide via digital streaming portals, official web apps, and mobile device platforms.
