Owned and operated by iHeartMedia, the station delivers a hard-driving, guitar-heavy musical format featuring legendary rock anthems, iconic tracks, and deep cuts from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Its comprehensive broadcast lineup anchors deep within the Central Valley's rock culture, appealing directly to multi-generational rock fans who appreciate timeless artists like AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty, and Van Halen. The station boasts a rich broadcast history that began when it officially signed on the air in November 1968 under the original call sign KDNO, initially serving as a Christian radio station. Over the subsequent decades, the frequency underwent multiple format and call-sign transitions—including stints as a smooth jazz outlet (KSMJ) and oldies station (KKDJ)—before pivoting permanently to its classic rock identity as KDFO in March 2000. Throughout its evolution under various corporate structures, it has remained a resilient cornerstone of Bakersfield's media landscape, establishing a deep-rooted connection with local listeners through events, promotions, and rock culture. Programming on 98.5 The Fox features a compelling blend of syndicated and local talent, most notably airing the nationally syndicated morning program The Bob & Tom Show to jump-start weekdays with comedy and commentary [cite: ]. Listeners can tune in via traditional FM radio receivers, digital streaming web portals, and the iHeartRadio platform, ensuring that Bakersfield's premier classic rock voice remains accessible across multiple modern platforms.
