96-1 SRS

📖 About

96-1 SRS (WSRS, 96.1 FM) is a commercial adult contemporary radio station licensed to Worcester, Massachusetts, and serving the Central Massachusetts region. With a rich history dating back to its experimental beginnings as W1XTG on June 17, 1940, it stands as one of the pioneering FM radio stations in the United States, originally launched by the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. Over the decades, the station evolved from duplicating its AM sister station WTAG and playing traditional standards into a mainstream adult contemporary music powerhouse. Owned by iHeartMedia, WSRS broadcasts from studios and a transmitter located in the Worcester suburb of Paxton. Its programming heavily features a popular adult contemporary music mix, alongside notable syndicated and networked programs such as Delilah and the Ellen K Weekend Show. Beyond its regular music format, 96-1 SRS is widely celebrated by local listeners for its annual tradition of switching to an all-Christmas music format starting in mid-November and running through Christmas Day, becoming a dominant holiday listening staple across Central Massachusetts. The station broadcasts using HD Radio technology, offering an HD2 subchannel that simulcasts sister news/talk station WTAG. Through its robust digital presence on iHeartRadio alongside traditional analog over-the-air coverage, WSRS remains a foundational media outlet providing music, community updates, and entertainment to generations of listeners in the Worcester market.
