93KHJ

📖 About

93KHJ (call sign: KKHJ-FM) is a premier commercial radio station broadcasting on 93.1 FM from Pago Pago, serving the entirety of American Samoa. Officially signed on in November 1999, the station takes its call letters and stylistic inspiration as a tribute to the famous KHJ in Los Angeles. Owned and operated by South Seas Broadcasting, Inc., 93KHJ has grown to become one of the most dominant and influential media outlets in the territory, offering a mainland-style Pop, Adult Contemporary, and Top 40 music format that appeals broadly to listeners of all ages. Its powerful transmitter sits high atop Mount Alava, overlooking Pago Harbor, allowing it to broadcast reliably across Tutuila and neighboring islands. Beyond its popular music rotation featuring a mix of current hits and classic favorites from the 1980s, 90s, and today, 93KHJ is widely distinguished for its robust commitment to local journalism and community engagement. It houses the territory's premier full-time radio news department, spearheaded by veteran News Director Monica Miller, delivering essential daily news updates in both English and Samoan. The station's flagship morning program, 'Samoan Sunrise'—co-hosted by prominent broadcasters like John Raynar and Keziah 'Sia' Atofau—captures the daily heartbeat of the islands. Uniquely for a radio broadcast of its scale, the morning show is also simulcast on local cable television via the Island Info Channel. Headquartered at the Aitulagi Building in Tafunafou, American Samoa, 93KHJ combines traditional terrestrial radio with robust digital expansion, including live web streaming platforms. As part of South Seas Broadcasting alongside sister stations like WVUV-FM, 93KHJ remains an essential cultural and informational touchstone for the local community as well as the global Samoan diaspora.
