90.3 KAZU
NPR for Monterey, Salinas, Santa Cruz
π About
90.3 KAZU (KAZU) is a non-commercial educational public radio station licensed to Pacific Grove, California, serving the entire Monterey Bay region, including Monterey, Salinas, and Santa Cruz. First hitting the airwaves in August 1977 as a 10-watt community radio station operated by the Great Silence Broadcasting Foundation in downtown Pacific Grove, KAZU relied on nearly 90 volunteers to deliver hyper-local community content. Over the decades, the station expanded its transmitter power and relocated to overcome physical coverage limitations. In the late 1990s, financial strain led to a transfer of ownership to California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB), transforming KAZU into a professional NPR affiliate.
