88.5 KURE

📖 About

88.5 KURE (Ames Alternative) is a student-run, student-managed college radio station operating out of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. Broadcasting on 88.5 FM and streaming globally online, the station is staffed entirely by dedicated student volunteers who curate diverse alternative, indie, electronic, hip-hop, and jazz music. With a rich broadcast history dating back to its establishment in 1949, KURE has long served as a creative incubator and cultural touchstone for both the campus and the wider Ames community, giving students hands-on experience in audio engineering, broadcasting, media production, and station management. Beyond its eclectic music rotation—which often features pre-release promotional albums and deep cuts—KURE offers robust programming that includes local news updates, talk shows, live in-studio recording sessions, and comprehensive live coverage of Iowa State Cyclones sports. The station is also well-known for organizing community events and traditions, most notably 'Kaleidoquiz', a legendary multi-hour radio trivia contest hosted annually on campus. Operating primarily out of Friley Hall, KURE functions under the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication affiliations and is licensed through Residence Association Broadcasting Services, Inc., continuing a nearly century-old legacy of independent collegiate broadcasting.
